We’re crazy about cricket in Antigua! And the entire island is hopping with excitement right now as the 2012 Caribbean T20 kicked off at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds in Antigua. Yesterday saw some breathtakingly skilful batting led by an unbeaten 56 from Trinidad and Tobago’s champion Kieron Pollard, shooting them to an undeniable 167-run victory over the Leeward Islands. Dramatic stuff!
The Caribbean T20 West Indies tournament involves ten crack cricket teams from the Caribbean, Canada and Britain, competing over a fortnight for a US$62,500 grand prize. Back in 2011 teams from Barbados and Jamaica, the Leewards and Windwards, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Combined Campus, Canada, Hampshire Royals and Somerset competed for the top spot and the coveted Caribbean T20 Trophy. In the end Trinidad just pipped Hampshire to the post.
This year sees Trinidad & Tobago, the Windward Islands, Guyana, the Leeward Islands and Canada playing Zone A and Jamaica, Barbados, Combined Campuses & Colleges, the Netherlands and Sussex Sharks in Zone B for an unforgettable 2012 tournament.
Sussex’s captain Michael Yardy, commenting on sussexcricket.co.uk, said, “We’re very much looking forward to the opportunity of testing ourselves against some impressive outfits in this tournament. We have got possibly the tougher of the two groups though we are confident we can progress. It gives us chance to test ourselves in different conditions against strong opposition and will enable us to learn about the depth in the squad.” By all accounts it’s set to be the best Caribbean T20 yet.
It’s exotic. It’s beautiful. It’s wonderfully hot. The nights are fragrant with flowers and the beaches are paradise itself.
